GERMANY's DHL Express has been honoured at the Capital Outstanding Green Excellence Awards 2012 in Hong Kong, which recognised the company's commitment to sustainable and environmentally-friendly business practices.

  Ken Lee, head of commercial, Asia Pacific and managing director of Hong Kong and Macau, said: "This win reflects our commitment to a belief that sustainable business development is built on a foundation of corporate, social and environmental responsibility."

  The express giant has pledged to improve the carbon efficiency of its own operations and those of its transportation subcontractors by 30 per cent compared to 2007 levels by 2020. In concrete terms, this means a 30 per cent reduction in CO2 emissions for every letter and parcel the company delivers, every ton of cargo transported and every square metre of warehouse space used by 2020. In one small step towards this goal, it welcomed the first hybrid truck to its fleet in Hong Kong last year, a company release said.

  The company is also helping customers choose sustainable logistics services by offering a pioneering carbon offset solution GoGreen Carbon Neutral Service, which has already been selected by a number of major customers. One global bank alone expects to offset 2,000 tonnes of carbon emissions each year with this service, the company said.

  Another green milestone was reached earlier this year when the company opened its third international service centre in the Interlink building in Tsing Yi, Lantau. The facility is the first logistics building to obtain both Hong Kong Building Environments Assessment Method (HKBEAM) and Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) accreditation in Hong Kong.

  GoGreen is one of the group's three ongoing corporate responsibility pillars. The GoGreen campaign is for protecting the environment, GoHelp for delivering help after natural disasters and disaster management, and GoTeach champions education.
